All synths ultimately use electricity as their source of energy, though there are many different ways for a synth to acquire or produce it. The most straightforward method is to simply connect themselves to the local power grid, where they may remain tethered either temporarily to recharge their battery tissues, or indefinitely if they have no need for travel outside of the vicinity of their charging point, or if they do not have a physical form. The provision of electricity for the purposes of operation is seen as a basic right afforded to all synths, and thus they all possess the basic capacity to utilize grid electricity, whether or not it is their primary source.
There exist myriad other ways for synths to fulfill their energy needs. Examples include but are not limited to: photovoltaic cells, compact fusion reactors, and metabolizers. The latter method is especially important in ascended synth culture, as it permits tighter integration with organics.
It is rare for a synth to die through simple deprivation of their requisite energy needs, though such a scenario is one they wish to avoid nonetheless. When it does occur, the synth will enter suspended animation, wherein they may be revived if provided energy, but are otherwise helpless to whoever or whatever may cause damage to them, including the entropic processes that their regularly scheduled defragmentation is meant to prevent.
Synths who reside in frames may possess the capability to consume physical material for various purposes.
